Cage-Free Greece

Cage-Free Greece aims to put an end to cage breeding of laying hens and promote more humane farming systems that do not use cages. This campaign is a core part of Ηellenic Animal Welfare Federation’s advocacy work and is carried out in collaboration with the Open Wing Alliance, a global animal rights coalition of about 100 animal rights organizations established by The Humane League.

Why must cage farming of layer hens be abolished?

Caged farming (battery or colony cages) is an extremely cruel intensive farming practice that confines egg-laying hens in tiny wire cages. The living conditions are so cramped that hens are unable to perform any natural behaviors like perching, scratching, nesting, dust bathing or even just stretching their wings. Trampling on one another, covered in lice and parasites, attacking each other to secure vital space or access food and water, egg-laying hens in caged farming are arguably some of the most mistreated animals living within legalised farming systems today. They suffer permanent psychological stress as well as numerous physical harms, including bone weakness and breakage, feather loss, diseases, mutilations and cannibalism.

Caged farming not only harms the welfare of the animals, it also affects the quality of the eggs and consumers’ health in more than one way:

  • The extremely high stocking density facilitates the development of pathogens and microorganisms that require constant and extensive use of antibiotics, residues of which are found in the eggs.
  • This widespread use of antibiotics in egg farms, including antibiotics categorized as ”Reserve Antibiotics” by the OHE, significantly contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and is a major public health concern today.
  • Caged farming where sick, stressed birds are crammed into filthy cages are perfect breeding grounds for global pandemics such as the ongoing bird flu, which sees cases jump from farmed birds to wild animals and humans.

Despite increasing public awareness and despites countries having banned them, caged eggs are still widespread.

Cage-Free Eggs:

The ethical and sustainable choice.

The transition to cage-free eggs is perfectly feasible. To achieve this change:

We educate consumers on the appalling breeding conditions in cages and on the alternatives farming systems.

We work with the Food, Hospitality and Tourism Industry, and with businesses such as restaurants, hotels and supermarket chains, calling on them to adopt a Cage-Free policy and phase out cage-free eggs from their supply chains.
